Fewer homes lost to foreclosure than elsewhere

Some stats released recently show how most of Huntington Beach has been untouched by the foreclosure wave that’s swamping other places.

The numbers also are an example of why you should not pay attention to percentages when numbers are low. For instance, foreclosures went up 300 % in ZIP code 92649.

That might sound alarming. But it represents 20 homes in the third quarter of 2008, compared to five in the same period in 2007.

The 20 homes, though, contrast with 197 foreclosures in Santa Ana’s 92704 ZIP code and 166 foreclosures in Anaheim’s 92804.

Of course, if 20 sounds like practically nothing, there is a little something to consider: Newport Beach’s 92661 had just one foreclosure in the third quarter.

Zip 2007 2008 Change TDs/1,000 homes

92647 13 31 138.5% 2.7
92648 7 34 385.7% 2.9
92649 5 20 300.0% 2.0
