Priciest Surf City condo has lots of sand — for $1.7 mill

December 1st, 2008, 3:00 am · 10 Comments · posted by Marilyn Kalfus, real estate reporter

Here’s the condominium complex with the unit that’s been topping the pile of asking prices for a Huntington Beach condo:

The 2-story unit, with one bedroom and two baths, is 968 square feet.

And yes, they want $1.7 million for it.

The 106-unit complex at 711 Ocean Ave. is on the sand with direct access to the beach. That does make it a rarity in Huntington Beach, where most oceanfront property is across Pacific Coast Highway.

The remodeled, contemporary unit, #308, has a 400 square-foot private balcony and an 180-degree ocean view.

The complex, built in 1967, is near 6th Street and PCH, a short walk to the Huntington Beach Pier and the shops on and around Main Street.

The condo was listed in August at $1.9 million, Redfin says, and lowered to $1.7 million in November. Other condos in the complex listed on the site aren’t anywhere near that amount.

    Hmmmm,

ride my bike by this complex frequently. Looks like a cheap motel from the outside. 1.7 mil for a unit there???????? Me thinks not.

Location, Location, Location… doesn’t matter that it looks like Motel 6

  • Troy says:

This is hilarious! It’s a nice view, no debate there, but it’s not worth 1.7 Million for that view.

HB is noisy and rather trashy from April to September, especially on weekends. All the Inland Empire kids and surf/skate trash come hang out and cause problems and generally just look like dorks walking on the streets. That’s part of the equation when it comes to “Location, Location, Location”. This 40 year old pad is in HB, so you have to weigh both the nice view with the bad environs in there.

That said, WHAT THE HECK IS THIS OWNER THINKING?! This place is decorated with extremely questionable taste. They’ve got way too many themes competing here; Tuscany patio set bought from Pottery Barn, 2005 Moderne bathroom bought at Expo Design Center, and a small living room that is sort of a Granny A-Go-Go statement. It’s all very odd.

Since the architecture is 60’s contemporary, it would probably be best to play up the decent bones of the complex and go with a Retro-Mod look here with some Beach Party A-Go-Go whimsy thrown in.

Still, this thing is going to sit on the market for months without a bit, until the owner brings it down to about half its current asking price. Even then, it’s going to take a lot of luck and just the right buyer to sign for this small 40 year old beach condo.

But you can’t make this stuff up for pure comedy! It’s like some sellers have no contact with the outside world when they pick their price.

Why would you consider a million seven condo in Huntington Beach, when for a lot less you could be in the wonderfully secluded “private” beach of Surfside Colony just seven miles north. GO FIGURE ! Oops, I guess I let the cat out of the bag…….

  • Rob Nel says:

    greed pure and simple.

  • lwps says:

There were condos there going for 180k in 1999.

  • lwps says:

Even more wow…they bought it for $30k in 1990!

  • Barry says:

There’s at least three more units that I know of for sale for less than half that price. A friend of mine bought one of those units back in the ’80’s. I was never really impressed with it, kinda cheezy. Nice place to party but I wouldn’t want to live there.
